What Is a Market Cycle?

Also known as: Crypto market cycle, Four-year cycle, Bitcoin four year cycle, How long is a crypto bull run, Crypto supercycle, Bull and bear cycle

Definition

A market cycle is the repeating pattern of expansion, peak, contraction and bottom that a market moves through. In crypto, Bitcoin's cycles have historically run about four years, roughly three years of rising prices followed by about one year of decline, and the rest of the market has tended to move with it.

Same setup, different odds. Where you are in the cycle changes what a chart is actually telling you.

A market cycle is the big wave under every chart: a long advance, a top, a deep decline and a base that sets up the next advance. Most people who get hurt in crypto first bought in the middle or at the top of one.

This is for the investor who wants a plan for every phase, including the ugly one. If you only show up when it's on the news... the news is usually late.

How long is a crypto market cycle?

The working model is the four-year cycle theory: about three years up, about one year down. Chad Wittfeldt measured the last two full cycles on a monthly Bitcoin chart in our portfolio course:

Leg Approximate price Duration by his count
2017 high to bear market bottom about $20,000 at the top 427 days
That bottom to the 2021 high to about $69,000 about 1,000 days, just under three years
2021 high to bear market bottom from about $69,000 395 days

Because the measurement comes off monthly candles, exact day counts shift slightly depending on which candles you anchor to. The shape is what matters: roughly a thousand days up, roughly four hundred days down. And those declines were DEEP. Bitcoin fell about 84% from its December 2017 high and about 77% from its November 2021 high to near $15,500 in November 2022.

What do you do in each market cycle phase?

Here's how the portfolio course maps actions to phases. Historical and illustrative, not a forecast.

Phase What the plan does
Bear market bottom Start dollar cost averaging in
Mid-cycle advance Keep the weekly buys running; stage a reserve for value cost averaging
Corrections inside the advance Deploy the reserve when the pre-written conditions are met; a cycle usually offers three or four
Cycle top Dollar cost average back out and take profit on a schedule
Bear market Hold cash in reserve, earning interest, until the next base

Run the 2021 numbers through that table. A portfolio held from the top through the bear market gave back most of its gain, and depending on diversification could have fallen 50-something percent. The same coins scaled out over the final months of the advance would have entered the decline mostly in cash, ready for the next bottom.

A plan for the top beats a prediction of it.

How do we use the market cycle?

For allocation and exposure, never as a date to bet on. Chad's thesis for this module: "See both sides and don't marry one." He's upfront about the model's limits. There are only one or two clean cycles to compare, the market now has institutions and governments buying at scale, and the pattern could change.

When he reviewed the supercycle arguments on camera, he accepted only three as material: institutional inflows, clearer regulation with real custody infrastructure, and government adoption. He rejected the idea that crypto is a flight to safety, because in uncertain times capital tends to leave speculative assets, not enter them. He also counts leverage as a force that shapes the cycle, since crowded leveraged positions get flushed again and again near highs.

Two of our named mechanisms come straight from the cycle. Assets move categorically congruent: when crypto pumps and when crypto dumps, the tiers move together, and mid and small caps move harder both ways. And because both directions happen, our traders keep bidirectional exposure, the skill and permission to short as well as to buy.

What's the most expensive market cycle mistake?

Buying mid-cycle after a rally, because that's when the headlines arrive. Most new buyers don't know the market has historically run three years up and one year down. They enter on emotion, after the move is obvious, then hold through the decline with no exit plan. That timeline gap is the heart of the HODL Paradox. The headlines show up late because a quiet bottom doesn't get clicks.

The opposite mistake is treating the four-year rhythm as law and betting the farm on a specific top or bottom date. The cycle tells you which side of the trade carries better odds, right? It doesn't tell you the day.

What market cycle check should you do this week?

Write down which phase you think we're in, and what your plan does in this phase and the next one. If you can't name both, that's the gap to close.
